Tips for an Effective Asthma Action Plan

Tips for an Effective Asthma Action Plan

The Importance of a Daily Asthma Action Plan for Adults

When you have asthma, it’s important to work with your doctor to manage your condition. Maintaining a partnership with your doctor and playing an active role in your asthma management can lead to better outcomes, according to a survey published in Annals of the American Thoracic Society in January 2017.
Working with your doctor to create a daily asthma action plan can help you better control your asthma and prevent emergencies. The asthma action plan gives a broad overview of how to manage your asthma from day to day. It offers specific guidance on managing symptoms, coping with asthma flares, and dealing with severe asthma that requires urgent care. Your asthma action plan outlines your daily treatment regimen, including what medications you need to take and when to take them. It should also cover:
  • Factors that can worsen asthma
  • Tips for reducing your risk of symptoms
  • Steps for responding to symptoms
  • Signs that indicate asthma is getting worse
  • Advice on when to call your doctor
  • Instructions for what to do in an emergency

Describe Your Medication Regimen

Your asthma action plan should include detailed information about what medications you take, your prescribed dosage, and when your doctor recommends taking them. Asthma treatment typically relies on long-acting drugs that you take regularly (even when you don't have symptoms) and short-acting ones to help respond to symptoms.
“Controller medicines need to be taken as prescribed at the same time every day," says pulmonologist Jennifer Trevor, MD, assistant professor in the division of pulmonary, allergy, and critical care medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and director of its Severe Asthma Clinic. "Rescue medicines are to be used only as needed to treat sudden worsening of asthma symptoms." If you use an inhaler, ask your healthcare provider to teach you how to use it correctly. Your action plan should also let you know what to do if your medications don't relieve symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, chest pain, and shortness of breath.
 Create Action Zones
One way to organize your daily asthma action plan is with a color-coded system that highlights different action zones. The American Lung Association (ALA) has a color-coded action plan template online that you can download, print, and fill out. The green zone means you're doing well. The yellow zone indicates what to do when you're having mild to moderate worsening of symptoms. And the red zone focuses on the actions you should take when you experience a severe worsening of symptoms.
“My action plan tells me which medicines to take when my symptoms match the green, yellow, or red zone description,” explains Melanie Carver, vice president of digital strategy and community services for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Carver, now 38, had asthma as a child. After a long period without symptoms, her asthma returned in her twenties, and she relies on her color-zone asthma treatment plan to better control her condition.

Keep Tabs on Your Symptoms

Paying attention to your symptoms can help you maintain better asthma control over the long term. According to the ALA, adult asthma symptoms might include:
  • A tight feeling in your chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Waking up at night with a cough
Your action plan can be linked to changes in these symptoms or to peak flow, a measure of how well your airways are working, notes the ALA. “In my experience, most adults with asthma prefer to guide therapy by symptoms rather than peak flow reading," Dr. Trevor says. "However, certain individuals may find using a peak flow meter to be a preferred means of monitoring and managing their asthma." If you're interested in a peak flow meter, ask your doctor to show you how to use it correctly and make sure your action plan outlines the steps to take based on the meter’s results.

Identify Your Asthma Triggers

Your asthma action plan should include notes about the factors that can worsen asthma symptoms, asthma triggers to avoid, and how to be prepared when avoidance isn't possible. "Patients should do their best to avoid situations in which they know these irritants will be encountered,” Trevor says.
But avoiding triggers isn’t always possible, especially when it comes to sudden changes in the weather, irritants in the air, or emotional triggers like anger or fear. That’s why it’s also important to know what steps to take if you're exposed to asthma triggers. Additionally, Trevor recommends talking to your doctor about allergy testing to uncover any triggers you have yet to identify. Taking anti-allergy medications as well as making changes in your home, car, and workplace can also help reduce asthma symptoms.

Always Carry Asthma Essentials With You

You don't want asthma to slow you down, but you do want to take a few moments every morning (or before you go to bed at night) to make sure that your asthma treatment medications and any other needed supplies are packed in your purse or backpack before you head out. “A helpful tip is to use a permanent marker to write your doses for each asthma zone on the plastic parts of your inhalers,” Carver says. Also, include a copy of your action plan and any medications you might need to control an allergic response. Once a month, as part of this prepping, take a few seconds to check expiration dates on your medications and replace any that are about to expire.

aintain an Asthma Log

Take notes every time you notice asthma symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, or waking up at night with a cough — and share the log with your doctor. “Through my notes, I figured out that I was having pretty significant allergies and asthma attacks around the same week of every year,” says Carver, who underwent allergy testing and learned it was necessary for her to reduce indoor pollens. “I also noticed that I was having a really hard time every time I caught a common cold or respiratory virus.” Laughter was another trigger that Carver discovered through her notes. Today, she factors these observations into her action plan. “Before I watch a really good comedy, I make sure I have my rescue medicine nearby,” she says. Keeping detailed notes not only helps you identify triggers, it lets you and your doctor know if your asthma control is improving or becoming less effective, Trevor says.

Computer Network Topology, Illustrated

Computer network topology is the physical communication scheme used by connected devices. These pages illustrate the common computer network topology types including bus, ring, and star. More complex networks can be built as hybrids of two or more of these basic topologies.
This diagram illustrates the bus network topology. A bus topology such as 10Base-2 or 10Base-5 Ethernet uses a single communication backbone for all devices or Bus Topology. Alternatively referred to as a line topology, a bus topology is a network setup in which each computer and network device are connected to a single cable or backbone. The following sections contain both the advantages and disadvantages of using a bus topology with your devices.

Ring Network Topology

This diagram illustrates the ring network topology. A ring topology such as FDDI or SONET sends messages clockwise or counterclockwise through the shared link. or A ring network is a network topology in which each node connects to exactly two other nodes, forming a single continuous pathway for signals through each node - a ring. Data travels from node to node, with each node along the way handling every packet.

Star Network Topology

This diagram illustrates the star network topology. A star topology typically uses a network hub or switch and is common in home networks or Star networks are one of the most common computer network topologies. In its simplest form, a star network consists of one central node, typically a switch or hub, which acts as a conduct to transmit messages. In star topology, every node (computer workstation or any other peripheral) is connected to a central node.

Mesh Network Topology

A mesh network is a network topology in which each node relays data for the network. All mesh nodes cooperate in the distribution of data in the network. Mesh networks can relay messages using either a flooding technique or a routing technique or
This diagram illustrates the mesh network topology. A mesh topology provides redundant communication paths between some or all devices (partial or full mesh).

Tree Network Topology

A tree topology combines characteristics of linear bus and star topologies. It consists of groups of star-configured workstations connected to a linear bus backbone cable (See fig. 3). Tree topologies allow for the expansion of an existing network, and enable schools to configure a network to meet their needs.

Androids Domination? 5 Reasons Why it really Matters

Androids Ongoing Domination? 5 Reasons Why it really matters
A few years ago Google’s Android OS started making waves, but it didn’t have much of an edge over its competitors. This year’s numbers show something completely different: Android OS is owning the mobile market. When you look at some of Android’s best features, it becomes obvious why so many people choose it over other options.
1.Android OS Gives Parents More Control
Android currently dominates the European market for mobile devices, accounting for over 70 percent of sales. In the U.S., Android devices account for 52 percent of sales.
One reason for this is that parents prefer giving their children Android devices.
Android 4.3, the latest version, lets parents control what their kids do online. You can restrict their app purchases; block inappropriate sites; and even turn off their devices. That last feature is important for parents who worry that their kids spend too much time fiddling online instead of participating in family activities.
Android 4.3’s Restricted Profiles also let employers control how their workers use devices. If a manager doesn’t want employees wasting time on certain sites, she can block those sites.
2. Small Android Devices Have Better Screen Resolution
Android tablet manufacturers managed to create small, high-resolution screens before their competitors. That’s a huge deal for people interested in tablets.
Let’s say that you want to watch a movie on a seven-inch tablet. A screen that size can’t give you a cinematic experience. If you increase the screen resolution, though, you get a clearer picture that makes the experience more enjoyable. At this time, only Android devices can offer that.
3. Android Devices Have Lower Prices
You can buy a seven-inch Android tablet for under $200. Even top-of-the-line mobile devices can cost less than $300 .
When it comes to high-priced competitors, consumers often shell out $600 or more for smaller tablets. That’s the kind of price difference that families and businesses have to take seriously. No one wants to spend an extra $300, especially when everyone in the family wants one.
If are concerned about cost at all, then you will go with Android every time.
4. Android Has More (And Potentially Better) Apps
It’s hard to say that Google Play has better apps than its competitors. After all, some apps are excellent while others need a lot of work. That’s just the nature of distributing apps made by so many developers.
One thing is clear: the consumption of Android apps is hitting yearly records with all types of consumers. In 2012, whether they were apps for home, work, school, or apps for the commute, Google Play had about 8.25 billion downloads. That doesn’t even include the apps that people downloaded from other sources. In reality, the demand for Android apps is much larger than that. Given that you can download apps through Chinese portals, though, it’s impossible to say exactly how large the Android apps market is.
It doesn’t really matter anyway. Even when you just look at downloads from Google Play, Android blows the competition away.

Why are Android apps the most popular option? Partially because Google doesn’t keep a firm grip on its software development tools. Google voluntarily opened the Android source code so developers could make innovative apps and changes to the kernel OS. This has helped Google forge partnerships with companies that prefer thinking outside of the box so they can offer customers unique software options.
While other mobile operating systems treat their app stores like cherished realms reserved for a select few, Google encourages exploration and free development.

That means better apps for users and better opportunities for developers.

How Cravings Can Derail Your Diet

It's not only your stomach that desires a certain food, it's also your head. Cravings have biological and psychological roots: Learning to control those urges can help your diet.
Why do you crave chocolate in the middle of the afternoon while your husband craves steak at the end of the day? Why do pregnant women have peculiar cravings and why do women crave more carbs in the days prior to their period? These and other questions plague people who want to maintain a healthy diet, yet feel undermined by their own body’s insistent demands for off-limits foods.
Cravings: The Driving Forces
Cravings — defined as “an intense desire to eat a certain food” — are both psychological and biological. "It's definitely a mixture,” says nutrition researcher Susan B. Roberts, PhD, a senior scientist at Tufts University in Medford, Mass.
Researchers have proposed various theories to explain why just about everyone struggles with cravings:
  • Your body learns, over time and exposure, that certain foods trigger a positive response. That’s why you continue to crave the “comfort foods" you grew up with.
  • Some foods may trigger a neuro-chemical response that releases pleasure hormones, such as dopamine, after eating them.
  • The sight or thought of certain foods causes another chemical cascade that compels you to believe the food in question will be very tasty (which is a good argument for keeping the foods you crave out of sight!)
  • Your diet may lack variety, which causes you to want a change.
  • You may need some nutrient or component of the food that your diet is lacking.
  • Your diet lacks your favorite foods, and you miss them.
  • You’re hungry.
Cravings: The Diet Impact
The impact of cravings on a set diet has been widely researched. Roberts and colleagues studied food cravings and behavior reported by 32 adult women participating in a six-month low-calorie diet. They learned that:
  • A person’s highest weight over her lifetime was related to the amount she ate when she gave in to cravings: the greater her weight had ever been, the more she ate.
  • People who were less active tended to crave fattier foods.
  • The most commonly craved foods were about twice as calorie-dense as the person’s prescribed diet foods and 30 percent higher in fat, while being 50 percent lower in protein and 30 percent lower in fiber.
  • Craved foods tended to be a mix of carbohydrates and fats, which Roberts argues may double the pleasure in terms of the body’s reward system.
  • Chocolate was the most commonly craved food, followed by salty snacks.
  • People who successfully lost weight on the diet had just as many cravings for high-calorie foods as their peers, but they gave in to them a lot less often.
The take-home message: People who want to lose weight should accept the fact that cravings will happen while they are dieting. Once they have reached their weight-loss goals, they need to develop a strategy to give in to cravings on a limited basis and in a portion-controlled manner.
Cravings: Women vs. Men
Everyone has his or her own special weakness, but cravings do tend to break down along gender lines and seasons of life.
“Women tend to crave sweet stuff — chocolate, candy, cookies. Men tend to crave steak, chips, salty stuff,” says Roberts, who has authored a diet book based on managing cravings, The Instinct Diet: Use Your Five Food Instincts to Lose Weight and Keep it Off. “Pregnant women have cravings that are all over the map, up to and including pica — eating things like clay — occasionally. We don't know why there is a difference between men and women; research hasn't gotten that far yet.”
Scientists continue to examine the relationship between cravings and weight loss (or gain), but in the meantime, experts like Roberts recommend accepting the universal nature of cravings. Work with them instead of trying to suppress them

Signs of High and Low Blood Sugar

One of the challenges of managing diabetes is maintaining consistent blood sugar (glucose) levels. Even with diligence, some situations can cause high blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, while others can bring on low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia.
There’s a lot you can do to minimize blood sugar ups and downs and avoid complications by monitoring your blood sugar levels with a glucose meter. How often to test depends on many factors, including the type of diabetes you have, any complications you’re facing, and the therapies you’re on, says Amber Taylor, MD, director of diabetes at the Center for Endocrinology at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Md.It’s also important to know the signs of both high blood sugar and low blood sugar, and what actions to take to bring blood sugar levels back to a desired range.
About High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycemia)
Common signs of high blood sugar include frequent urination, feeling thirsty, eating more food but not gaining as much weight as usual, fatigue, dry or itchy skin, and more frequent infections, says Athena Philis-Tsimikas, MD of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute in La Jolla, Calif.
A blood sugar reading above 180 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) is considered above normal and can bring on these symptoms, although it’s possible to have high blood sugar without any symptoms, Dr. Philis-Tsimikas says. A reading above 300 mg/dL is considered severe. If your blood sugar is above 250 mg/dL for two days, Philis-Tsimikas advises informing your doctor and asking for specific recommendations for treatment. Having blood sugar levels above 300 mg/dL for more than a week can lead to more severe symptoms such as nausea, drowsiness, blurred vision, confusion, and dizziness, especially when standing up from a sitting or lying position.
Ways to treat high blood sugar include:
  • Taking your prescribed medications as directed
  • Eating fewer carbohydrates with your meals
  • Exercising regularly with your doctor’s guidance
About Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia)
When your blood sugar drops rapidly or when the reading falls between 50 to 70 mg/dL if you take medications for diabetes, Philis-Tsimikas says you may experience early symptoms of low blood sugar such as shaking, sweating, rapid heartbeat, headache, hunger, weakness, fatigue, impaired vision, anxiety, irritability, and dizziness.
Blood sugar values that drop below 50 mg/dL are considered severe and can lead to more significant and dangerous symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, confusion, loss of consciousness, and seizures. If you experience more than two blood sugar readings below 50 mg/dL in a week, notify your doctor and go over your treatment plan.
To treat blood sugar below 70 mg/dL, Philis-Tsimikas recommends ONE of these options:
  • Drink one-half to one cup of juice, skim milk, or regular soda OR
  • Chew five to six hard candies OR
  • Take four glucose tablets OR
  • Swallow one tube of glucose gel
Then, check your blood sugar in 15 minutes. If it’s still below 70 mg/dL, eat more sugar. If your symptoms don’t stop, call your doctor or seek medical attention. If your blood sugar returns to normal, be sure to eat at your next scheduled meal or snack.

TIPS TO FIGHT DISEASE AND STRENGTHEN YOUR IMMUNITY

Your immune system does a remarkable job of defending you against disease-causing microorganisms. But sometimes it fails: A germ invades successfully and makes you sick. Is it possible to intervene in this process and boost your immune system? What if you improve your diet? Take certain vitamins or herbal preparations? Make other lifestyle changes in the hope of producing a near-perfect immune response?
What can you do to boost your immune system?

The idea of boosting your immunity is enticing, but the ability to do so has proved elusive for several reasons. The immune system is precisely that — a system, not a single entity. To function well, it requires balance and harmony. There is still much that researchers don't know about the intricacies and interconnectedness of the immune response. For now, there are no scientifically proven direct links between lifestyle and enhanced immune function.

But that doesn't mean the effects of lifestyle on the immune system aren't intriguing and shouldn't be studied. Researchers are exploring the effects of diet, exercise, age, psychological stress, and other factors on the immune response, both in animals and in humans. In the meantime, general healthy-living strategies are a good way to start giving your immune system the upper hand.

Immunity in action. A healthy immune system can defeat invading pathogens as shown above, where two bacteria that cause gonorrhea are no match for the large phagocyte, called a neutrophil, that engulfs and kills them (see arrows).

Adopt healthy-living strategies

Your first line of defense is to choose a healthy lifestyle. Following general good-health guidelines is the single best step you can take toward naturally keeping your immune system strong and healthy. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as these:

    Don't smoke.

Eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in saturated fat.

    Exercise regularly.

    Maintain a healthy weight.

    Control your blood pressure.

If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

    Get adequate sleep.

Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly.

Get regular medical screening tests for people in your age group and risk category.

Be skeptical

Many products on store shelves claim to boost or support immunity. But the concept of boosting immunity actually makes little sense scientifically. In fact, boosting the number of cells in your body — immune cells or others — is not necessarily a good thing. For example, athletes who engage in "blood doping" — pumping blood into their systems to boost their number of blood cells and enhance their performance — run the risk of strokes.

Attempting to boost the cells of your immune system is especially complicated because there are so many different kinds of cells in the immune system that respond to so many different microbes in so many ways. Which cells should you boost, and to what number? So far, scientists do not know the answer. What is known is that the body is continually generating immune cells. Certainly it produces many more lymphocytes than it can possibly use. The extra cells remove themselves through a natural process of cell death called apoptosis — some before they see any action, some after the battle is won. No one knows how many cells or what the best mix of cells the immune system needs to function at its optimum level.

What can improve your mood, boost your ability to fend off infection, and lower your risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and colon cancer? The answer is regular exercise. It may seem too good to be true, but it's not. Hundreds of studies demonstrate that exercise helps you feel better and live longer. This report answers many important questions about physical activity. It will also help guide you through starting and maintaining an exercise program that suits your abilities and lifestyle.

Age and immunity

The aging process somehow leads to a reduction of immune response capability, which in turn contributes to more infections, more inflammatory diseases, and more cancer. As life expectancy in developed countries has increased, so too has the incidence of age-related conditions. Happily, investigation into the aging process can benefit us all — no matter what our age.

While some people age healthily, the conclusion of many studies is that, compared with younger people, the elderly are more likely to contract infectious diseases and, even more importantly, more likely to die from them. Respiratory infections, influenza, and particularly pneumonia are a leading cause of death in people over 65 worldwide. No one knows for sure why this happens, but some scientists observe that this increased risk correlates with a decrease in T cells, possibly from the thymus atrophying with age and producing fewer T cells to fight off infection. Thymus function declines beginning at age 1; whether this decrease in thymus function explains the drop in T cells or whether other changes play a role is not fully understood. Others are interested in whether the bone marrow becomes less efficient at producing the stem cells that give rise to the cells of the immune system.

A reduction in immune response to infections has been demonstrated by older people's response to vaccines. For example, studies of influenza vaccines have shown that for people over age 65, the vaccine is much less effective compared to healthy children (over age 2). But despite the reduction in efficacy, vaccinations for influenza and S. pneumoniae have significantly lowered the rates of sickness and death in older people when compared with no vaccination.

There appears to be a connection between nutrition and immunity in the elderly. A form of malnutrition that is surprisingly common even in affluent countries is known as "micronutrient malnutrition." Micronutrient malnutrition, in which a person is deficient in some essential vitamins and trace minerals that are obtained from or supplemented by diet, can be common in the elderly. Older people tend to eat less and often have less variety in their diets. One important question is whether dietary supplements may help older people maintain a healthier immune system. Older people should discuss this question with a physician who is well versed in geriatric nutrition, because while some dietary supplementation may be beneficial for older people, even small changes can have serious repercussions in this age group.
What about diet?

Like any fighting force, the immune system army marches on its stomach. Healthy immune system warriors need good, regular nourishment. Scientists have long recognized that people who live in poverty and are malnourished are more vulnerable to infectious diseases. Whether the increased rate of disease is causedhealthy immune system by malnutrition's effect on the immune system, however, is not certain. There are still relatively few studies of the effects of nutrition on the immune system of humans, and even fewer studies that tie the effects of nutrition directly to the development (versus the treatment) of diseases.

There is some evidence that various micronutrient deficiencies — for example, deficiencies of zinc, selenium, iron, copper, folic acid, and vitamins A, B6, C, and E — alter immune responses in animals, as measured in the test tube. However, the impact of these immune system changes on the health of animals is less clear, and the effect of similar deficiencies on the human immune response has yet to be assessed. But the research at this stage is promising, at least for some of the micronutrients.

So what can you do? If you suspect your diet is not providing you with all your micronutrient needs — maybe you don't like vegetables or you choose white bread over whole grains — taking a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement brings health benefits of many types, beyond any possibly beneficial effects on the immune system. Taking megadoses of a single vitamin does not. More is not necessarily better. Researchers are investigating the immune boosting potential of a number of different nutrients.
Herbs and other supplements

Walk into a store, and you will find bottles of pills and herbal preparations that claim to "support immunity" or otherwise boost the health of your immune system. Although some preparations have been found to alter some components of immune function, thus far there is no evidence that they actually bolster immunity to the point where you are better protected against infection and disease. Demonstrating whether an herb — or any substance, for that matter — can enhance immunity is, as yet, a highly complicated matter. Scientists don't know, for example, whether an herb that seems to raise the levels of antibodies in the blood is actually doing anything beneficial for overall immunity.
The stress connection

Modern medicine, which once treated the connection between emotions and physical health with skepticism, has come to appreciate the closely linked relationship of mind and body. A wide variety of maladies, including stomach upset, hives, and even heart disease, are linked to the effects of emotional stress. But although the relationship between stress and immune function is being studied by a number of different types of scientists, so far it is not a major area of research for immunologists.

Studying the relationship between stress and the immune system presents difficult challenges. For one thing, stress is difficult to define. What may appear to be a stressful situation for one person is not for another. When people are exposed to situations they regard as stressful, it is difficult for them to measure how much stress they feel, and difficult for the scientist to know if a person's subjective impression of the amount of stress is accurate. The scientist can only measure things that may reflect stress, such as the number of times the heart beats each minute, but such measures also may reflect other factors.

Most scientists studying the relationship of stress and immune function, however, do not study a sudden, short-lived stressor; rather, they try to study more constant and frequent stressors known as chronic stress, such as that caused by relationships with family, friends, and co-workers, or sustained challenges to perform well at one's work. Some scientists are investigating whether ongoing stress takes a toll on the immune system.

But it is hard to perform what scientists call "controlled experiments" in human beings. In a controlled experiment, the scientist can change one and only one factor, such as the amount of a particular chemical, and then measure the effect of that change on some other measurable phenomenon, such as the amount of antibodies produced by a particular type of immune system cell when it is exposed to the chemical. In a living animal, and especially in a human being, that kind of control is just not possible, since there are so many other things happening to the animal or person at the time that measurements are being taken.

Despite these inevitable difficulties in measuring the relationship of stress to immunity, scientists who repeat the same experiment many times with many different animals or human beings, and who get the same result most of the time, hope that they can draw reasonable conclusions.

Does being cold make you sick?

Almost every mother has said it: "Wear a jacket or you'll catch a cold!" Is she right? So far, researchers who are studying this question think that normal exposure to moderate cold doesn't increase your susceptibility to infection. Most health experts agree that the reason winter is "cold and flu season" is not that people are cold, but that they spend more time indoors, in closer contact with other people who can pass on their germs.

But researchers remain interested in this question in different populations. Some experiments with mice suggest that cold exposure might reduce the ability to cope with infection. But what about humans? Scientists have dunked people in cold water and made others sit nude in subfreezing temperatures. They've studied people who lived in Antarctica and those on expeditions in the Canadian Rockies. The results have been mixed. For example, researchers documented an increase in upper respiratory infections in competitive cross-country skiers who exercise vigorously in the cold, but whether these infections are due to the cold or other factors — such as the intense exercise or the dryness of the air — is not known.

A group of Canadian researchers that has reviewed hundreds of medical studies on the subject and conducted some of its own research concludes that there's no need to worry about moderate cold exposure — it has no detrimental effect on the human immune system. Should you bundle up when it's cold outside? The answer is "yes" if you're uncomfortable, or if you're going to be outdoors for an extended period where such problems as frostbite and hypothermia are a risk. But don't worry about immunity.
Exercise: Good or bad for immunity?

Regular exercise is one of the pillars of healthy living. It improves cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, helps control body weight, and protects against a variety of diseases. But does it help to boost your immune system naturally and keep it healthy? Just like a healthy diet, exercise can contribute to general good health and therefore to a healthy immune system. It may contribute even more directly by promoting good circulation, which allows the cells and substances of the immune system to move through the body freely and do their job efficiently.

Some scientists are trying to take the next step to determine whether exercise directly affects a person's susceptibility to infection. For example, some researchers are looking at whether extreme amounts of intensive exercise can cause athletes to get sick more often or somehow impairs their immune function. To do this sort of research, exercise scientists typically ask athletes to exercise intensively; the scientists test their blood and urine before and after the exercise to detect any changes in immune system components. While some changes have been recorded, immunologists do not yet know what these changes mean in terms of human immune response.

But these subjects are elite athletes undergoing intense physical exertion. What about moderate exercise for average people? Does it help keep the immune system healthy? For now, even though a direct beneficial link hasn't been established, it's reasonable to consider moderate regular exercise to be a beneficial arrow in the quiver of healthy living, a potentially important means for keeping your immune system healthy along with the rest of your body.

One approach that could help researchers get more complete answers about whether lifestyle factors such as exercise help improve immunity takes advantage of the sequencing of the human genome. This opportunity for research based on updated biomedical technology can be employed to give a more complete answer to this and similar questions about the immune system. For example, microarrays or "gene chips" based on the human genome allow scientists to look simultaneously at how thousands of gene sequences are turned on or off in response to specific physiological conditions — for example, blood cells from athletes before and after exercise. Researchers hope to use these tools to analyze patterns in order to better understand how the many pathways involved act at once
